Child Criminal Exploitation

What is Child Criminal Exploitation?

Child exploitation is a type of abuse. When children are exploited, or ‘groomed’, they are often given things like gifts, money, drugs, respect or affection. This is usually in exchange for undertaking criminal activity, which is known as child criminal exploitation, or partaking in sexual activities or acts, which is known as child sexual exploitation.

Exploitation does not always occur in one place, children can be taken to places outside of their hometown, which is known as trafficking. Children may be moved around to different places and be forced to take part in criminal or sexual activities.

What are some signs of child criminal exploitation?

  • Returning home late, or staying out all night
  • Going missing (sometimes frequently)
  • An increase in possessions (e.g., new phone(s), shoes, clothes, jewellery, money)
  • Frequently visiting places away from home
  • Increased drug use, or having a lot of drugs in their possession
  • Poor attendance in school, college or work, which is often unexplained
  • Changes in behaviour, such as increased aggression
  • Changes in language used (e.g., swearing, violence, sexual or drug related terms)
  • What to do if I think I am being exploited?
